Short Description
This method consists of the development and implementation of a workshop in which school students are familiarised with European identity concepts, gaining awareness of the similarities between the various EU nations, by the means of comparing different bread recipes from the named nations. Also, bread-tasting takes place, where everybody gets a chance to discuss the topics which they were introduced to.
Full Description
The Danubian Heritage Workshop method aims at enhancing school students’ knowledge of certain EU topics through the study and research of materials, such as traditional bread recipes. The participants would gather existing research material on bread, old recipes and even breads which they have baked themselves according to the recipes. Together with teachers, the students would compare the recipes, find the similarities and notice the differences. They would make parallels and finally taste the baked breads, while discussing their findings.
Step-by-step explanation
Step 1
Doing the research
The school students would be given a task by their teachers to do a small research on traditional bread recipes from around the Danube Region. They could also bake breads according to those recipes and bring them to the workshop.
Step 2
Arranging the materials
Photos with breads and the written recipes are put on a board and the baked goods on a table, around which the participants sit.
Step 3
Discussing the subject
The teachers introduce the students to several notions in the context of European awareness, notions such as intangible heritage, intercultural dialogue, cultural exchange etc Subsequently, the students form their own opinions on the subject and compare the bread recipes, using also newly-learned historical and geographical knowledge.
Step 4
Bread tasting
The final step of the method is bread tasting, where the participants can compare the different recipes in a practical way, by getting to taste the breads and discuss their historical and other contexts.
Step 5
Exhibition
An exhibition with the recipes is kept in the halls of the institution for the information to reach a larger number of individuals.
Results
The result of the application of the method is an exhibition consisting of the collected recipes and photos, as well as the outcomes of the discussions which would have taken place in the frame of the workshop.
Variation of the approach
The aim of the method is to enlarge the perspectives of the young generation in accordance with the European awareness. They would be introduced to several concepts, which they would later apply in a practical way by comparing various bread recipes from the EU regions.
