Short Description

Every competition is:
 an organized event in which people try to win a prize by being the best, fastest, etc.:
 a situation in which someone is trying to win something or be more successful than someone else.
The Creative Regional Baking Competition was organized by the Union of Pensioners of the Slivo Pole Municipality.
Its main task for the participants was to prepare regional bread products which presented creative ideas about “their” Europe as a peaceful living place and to win the participation in the International Creative Baking Competition Create and bake “your” Europe!, 2018, in Ulm, Germany.

Full Description

The regional competition is an educational and specific skill-oriented event with abundant prizes and certificates. The personal benefits of such kind of competitions are the opportunities to:
 perform individually before a relevant local audience;
 demonstrate practical skills, knowledge, creativity, and competences;
 improve collaboration with neighbours and friends;
 develop social and emotional skills such as collaborating with widely differing personalities, dealing with conflicting opinions and ideas, and better evaluation of risks
 increase one’s motivation for active ageing;
 handle stressful, competitive situations;
 encourage and reward creative thinking.

An example of good practice

Step-by-step explanation

Step 1

Step 1: Dissemination of information about CR-BC

Organizing meetings of the pensioner clubs by their chairpersons. Meetings attended by representatives of DANET and the University of Ruse, for the purpose of presenting the idea of the International and the Regional Creative Baking Competition, and inviting promising participants.

Step 2

Step 2: Organizing the creative baking competitions

Organizing the creative baking competitions in different municipalities as parts of CR-BC.

Supporting the members of different clubs of the Unions of Pensioners and the Union of Disabled People in organizing the competitions: stimulating and motivating pensioners to participate; defining the competitions’ pre-requisites (different juries for each municipality, venues, dates, time, documenting; media; registration); preparing certificates and prizes.

Step 3

Step 3: Holding the competitions

Presenting the bread products and the idea of Europe by the participants. Testing and selecting the winners by the juries. Congratulatory addresses by the representatives of the local governments. Giving prizes to the winners and certificates of participation to all participants. Interviewing the winners.

Results

The results of the method are: developed self-confidence, social, emotional and creative skills; increased motivation for active ageing; encouraged creative and independent thinking; visuals to document the event such as photos and media presentation of the project Tastes of Danube: Bread Connects.

Printed book; website; exhibition; media releases

Variation of the approach

Can be applied in different villages with many participants and organizations.

Competition motto can be changed keeping bread as the core idea.

Can be used with other key concepts of national cultures.
