Short Description
The Bread-Therapy Workshop consists of a series of activities centred on the making of bread, done by a group of individuals with special needs. The aim of this method is to enhance communication, creative and teambuilding skills of people with special needs. The pupils make bread, in small teams, collaborate, share ideas, and work on the task in an amusing way for everyone.
Full Description
The target group of this method are people with special needs, which can be pupils at a school, or other individuals. By engaging in bread-baking activities, they are stimulated to communicate with others, and work together towards a common goal. A team of helpers, their number depending on the number of individuals taking part in the workshop, guide them and teach them how to bake bread. The participants are divided into small groups, to assure easier communication. The workshop includes game activities, where the participants make drawings with the flour, explaining what they are drawing why they have chosen that image, thus enhancing their creative skills and abilities and also their emotional experiences.
Step-by-step explanation
Step 1
Forming the teams and getting to know each other. The participants at the workshop are divided into groups of 5 (but the number can vary), they engage in dialogue with the others in the frame of the group in a friendly and informal way, thus reducing the anxiety of interpersonal communication. Taking part in a discussion is made easier for them by knowing their common goal and the theme of what they should talk about.
Step 2
Further explaining the theme.
The helpers explain step-by-step, how a bread should be made, visiting the tables the participants are working at. They give advice and appreciate the efforts and ideas which the groups have made. Seeing that they effectively followed the tasks and achieved the result gives them a sense of self-trust and willingness for future team activities.
Step 3
Game activities.
This step should be made during the whole workshop. The participants should see the whole bread-baking activity as a recreational one, and as a mean to form new social relations. Games such as playing with the flour and drawing with it helps them expressing themselves and developing their social skills.
Results
The method has quick and significant results on the local level, leading to a larger participation of the people with special needs in the activities of the society and in community activities. Baking bread is the first milestone in such workshops, later the participants could engage in other activities of such kind, which can lead to a large variety of material results.
Variation of the approach
The aim of the method is to help the people with special needs engage in dialogue with the others and acting as an active part of the society. The implementation of this method successfully would increase their communicative, creative, social and teamwork skills, in an easy way.
